National Merit Honor Students

In addition to National Merit Semifinalists announced in September, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Otto congratulates the following 145 seniors who have been recognized through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists

More than 150,000 high school juniors from all parts of the United States requested consideration in the 2009 National Achievement Program when they took the 2007 Preliminary SAT college entrance exam. These scholastically talented African-American students now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 scholarships worth more than $2.6 million to be awarded next spring.

Hispanic Recognition

The National Hispanic Recognition Program is a College Board program that provides national recognition of exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors and identifies them for postsecondary institutions. Students enter the program by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT college entrance exam.

Commended Students Seniors who have earned "Commended" status in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program are being recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry (2007 Preliminary SAT college entrance exam). These students are among 34,000 high performers across the nation who are "Commended" based on a national selection index score of 200; however, they are not continuing in the competition for National Merit Scholarships.
