Plano ISD Students Earn 100+ Awards at ExxonMobil State Science & Engineering Fair

The Exxon Mobil Texas State Science and Engineering Fair was held in San Antonio March 28-30, with Plano ISD students bringing home more than 100 awards to include scholarships, summer camps, further competition and awards.
"Plano ISD students performed extremely well against very competitive projects," reported Linda Flack, Plano ISD secondary science coordinator. "Both the junior (middle school) and senior (9-12th grade) students earned grand prize awards and numerous first places."
Senior Division Awards
Janice Zhang from PSHS captured The Best in Fair for the Physical Science Fair, 1st Grand Prize, numerous special awards and an all-expense paid trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair May 10-16 in Reno, NV. This level of competition is for students only at the high school level. Her project is in the category of Computer Science.
Sheila Chandrahas at Rice Middle School was awarded the 1st Grand Prize in the Life Science Fair and the 3M Discovery Award. Sheila's project is in the category of Biochemistry.
Also receiving high honors:
Rounok Joardar from Shepton HS: Reserve Grand Prize in the Physical Science Fair, 1st Place in Engineering (Electrical & Mechanical) Governor's Science and Engineering Champions Academy, Schriener's University $20,000 scholarship. He too will be traveling to the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Team Projects:
Rohit Vadvadgi and Vaibhav Sharma from Clark High School won 1st Place in the Team Life category which automatically advances them to the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Ian Chan and Alex Wang from Plano East Senior High School won 1st Place in the Team Physical category which also automatically advances them to the International Science and Engineering Fair.
All first place projects in the senior division are given the opportunity to join other students for a week in San Antonio to "do" science. The Governor's Science and Engineering Champions Academy is provided through the Governor's office. First place projects also receive a $20,000.00 scholarship to Schriener's University.
Junior Division Special Awards
All 1st and 2nd Place projects in the junior division will receive the opportunity to advance to the 3M Young Scientist Discovery Challenge in New York City. Their success will be known in the fall of 2009.
Students will submit a video to the competition based on specific criteria for consideration to spend a week in New York with other students.
