The Junkins Scholarships, named in honor of TI’s former chairman, president and CEO, are awarded to National Merit® Program finalists who are sons or daughters of active, retired or deceased TI employees.

This year’s scholars, who represent the largest group since TI began awarding the scholarships in 1996, come from schools in eight U.S. states and China. They represent the most states ever and the first award to a student from an international school.

“I have no doubt that the intelligence, creativity and enthusiasm of the Junkins Scholarship winners will lead them to great success.  It is encouraging to know the world will be in such capable hands in the future, and TI takes pride in honoring these outstanding students,” Templeton said.

Each year, less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide achieve the status of National Merit® Scholarship Program Semifinalist. Students are selected for the awards based on their scores on the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, grades, leadership abilities, writing skills, extracurricular activities and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

“This year’s winners are exceptionally bright and driven,” Templeton said.  “Among the group are gifted writers, deep thinkers, skilled artists and talented musicians.

Several are multilingual and technology-savvy and all are active in their schools and communities. They plan to study fields as varied as engineering, biology, architecture and psychology. They will be our future physicians, scientists and leaders.”

TI funds the scholarships in partnership with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a private, not-for-profit organization.
