Cell Phone Ban in School Zones Effective in Plano ISD

October 30, 2009

On September 1, 2009, a new law was enacted by the Texas legislature that prohibits the use of cell phones and texting while driving through a school zone (unless using a hands-free device). Since that time, the City of Plano has been busy installing approximately 750 signs in 61 school zones.

As of today (October 30, 2009), the required signage has been installed in every school zone in the City of Plano. Until November 30, 2009, the Plano Police Department will continue their educational efforts regarding this new law by issuing warning citations and reminding drivers of the new law. On December 1, 2009, the educational grace period will cease and violators will be issued citations that carry a fine of up to $200.00 for each infraction.

Please remember when traveling through a school zone: do not use a cell phone, watch out for children in the roadway, keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road at all times.
