National School Counseling Week February 1-5
January 29, 2010
February 1-5 is National School Counseling Week, an annual event in which students, faculty and staff have an opportunity to pay special tribute to school counselors for their dedication to the 55,000 students enrolled in Plano schools.
In honor of this special week, the Plano ISD Board of Trustees will salute counselors at their February 2 meeting and will hear an update about the district's counseling and guidance program from Director Paul Weaver and school counselors.

Mr. Weaver will also announce at the meeting three Plano ISD elementary schools that have been named winners of the state CREST (Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas) awards. They are among 27 Texas schools selected for the recognition.
Joining Paul Weaver in presenting to the school board on February 2 will be Counselors Bryan Smith, Stinson Elementary; Cathy Shepheard, Wilson Middle School; Jane Clanahan, Shepton High School; and Cynthia Williams, Plano East Senior High School.
All school counselors in attendance at the meeting will be recognized by trustees. Plano ISD employs nearly 160 school counselors for students in grades PreK-12)
Plano ISD's counseling program consists of three guidance strands --academic success, college and career information and personal and social growth. The focus of the February 2 report will be on the third strand.
CREST Award-winning Counseling Programs
In addition to sharing information about the district's counseling and guidance program with trustees, Paul Weaver will announce three elementary schools that have been named winners of the state CREST (Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas) awards -- Andrews, Haun and Memorial Elementary Schools.
The CREST award was introduced by the Texas School Counselor Association in 2005 to recognize excellence in school counseling. Schools that receive the award have demonstrated a commitment to using their school guidance and counseling programs to improve the lives and achievement of students in academic, career and personal social domains.
CREST results in a continuous improvement document that provides a school counseling program the opportunity to demonstrate effecive communication and a commitment to results. CREST allows counselors to evaluate their program, program their program and to incorporate state and national models into their school counseling programs.
