Former Superintendent Tours Newly-Renovated Namesake Hendrick Middle School

February 4, 2010

Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick, retired Plano ISD superintendent of schools (1961-1991) was guest of honor on February 2 at Hendrick Middle School, his namesake campus. Dr. Hendrick was greeted by Principal Sheila Spencer, Assistant Principal Brant Perry, Area Assistant Superintendent Mike Collinsworth and current Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Otto.

Hendrick students, faculty, staff, PTA and district leaders welcomed Dr. Hendrick at a reception held in the school's library. Students sang songs and presented him with gifts, including a "then and now" school scrapbook, spirit wear and additional school items.

Principal Sheila Spencer and students Larissa Robinson, Erica Morales, Rachel Nguyen and Maggie Crossland were on hand to honor Dr. Hendrick.

PAL (Peer Assistance and Leadership) students who presented gifts included Sarah Bibb (crystal paperweight that says "You Make a Difference"); Jonathan Cao (a bag of goodies - Hendrick staff shirt, water bottle, badge holder); Maggie Crossland (picture book of Hendrick "then and now" and pictures of student life at Hendrick).

Hendrick PAL (Peer Assistance and Leadership) student Jonathan Cao said, "Dr. Hendrick, here are some things our teachers get that have your name on them," as he presented a bag of goodies (staff shirt, water bottle and badge holder) to the former superintendent.

Dr. Hendrick shared with the group a story about the picture that was taken of him standing in front of Hendrick when the building was completed. When he shared the photo with his family, he overheard his grandson say to his daughter-in-law, "Guess what, Mom, Grandpa is named after a building."

Barbara Glassner, Hendrick social studies teacher and team leader, wrote and read an acrostic "Hendrick." She then presented the acrostic to the former superintendent.

Dr. Hendrick also had the opportunity to tour the facility, which recently underwent a 20-year renovation. "Dr. Hendrick was in the hallways during passing periods, talking to teachers and smiling ear to ear," reported Principal Spencer.

The Hendrick "Red Hots" performed the hit Rascal Flatts song "Life is a Highway" for Dr. Hendrick and guests. They are Amaya Aguilar, Haley Camizzi, Brittney Curtis, Bailey Haney, Mary Kate Kohl, Christina Moen, Ally Moore, Sami Nash and Maggie Sagers. Director is Terri Hamilton.

Hendrick teacher Jay Breeding and colleagues enjoyed reviewing a "then and now" scrapbook about Hendrick Middle School, which was presented to Dr. Hendrick at the reception.
