Plano West Captures TMEA State Honor Orchestra Title

December 4, 2009

For the thirteenth consecutive year, a Plano orchestra has been named top orchestra in the state of Texas. The Plano West Senior High School Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Jo Wallace-Abbie and Amy Mabel, earned the designation as 2010 High School Honor String Orchestra by the Texas Music Educators Association following a recent multi-level judging process in Austin.

The Chamber Orchestra will now begin preparations for their invitational performance and the Annual TMEA Clinic/Convention held at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio in February, 2010. The Plano West concert is scheduled for at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 11, in a concert venue with a capacity of 3,000.

Kathy Kuddes, Plano ISD fine arts director, says, "We are so proud of the Plano West Chamber Orchestra. Its designation as the Honor String Orchestra this year is a testament to our outstanding students and great teaching by Mrs. Wallace-Abbie and at every level of the program."

The first TMEA performance by a Plano music ensemble was the Haggard Middle School Symphonic Band, which performed under their current director, Ken Valliant, at the 1991 convention. Since that time, a total of 27 groups, representing band, choir and orchestra programs across the district have received this invitation. For the past 13 years, at least one Plano ISD string ensemble has been among the groups that have earned the right to perform for music educators across the state.
