Teacher & Student Awarded at Texas Junior Science Symposium
February 5, 2010
The 36th Annual Texas Junior Science & Humanities Symposium was held January 28-30 at Texas A&M for students who are selected from across the state to present their science research.
This year, Plano ISD student Rounok Joardar of Plano West Senior High School (pictured with presenter Colonel Bartel) captured the grand prize award, and four additional students advanced to the final round. Rounok will now advance to the national competition which to be held April 28 through May 2 in Bethesda, Maryland. One student from the national symposium will earn a trip to London this summer. Additional Plano ISD students who advanced to the final round with Rounok were Elizabeth Quigley from Clark High School, Michael Myong from Williams High School and Andrew Mahre of Plano Senior High School.
In addition, teacher Deanna Shea (pictured at left) from Shepton High School, was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award at the symposium. The award honors an individual teacher and his or her school's contributions to advancing student participation in scientific research.
Students from 48 other states and Puerto Rico are also competing in their respective state symposiums. The event is sponsored by the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy and Air Force. Visit the event website for more information.
