ExxonMobil State Science Fair Grand Prize Winners Qualify to Attend International Fair

Justin DuCongratulations to all Plano ISD secondary students who competed at the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair held on April 1-3 in San Antonio.

"Plano ISD students did very well in the competition," noted Linda Flack, secondary science coordinator. "Three students qualified to advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in May in Los Angeles."

Justin Du, Rice Middle School, is among four Plano ISD students who captured grand prize awards at the state science and engineering fair.

  • 1st - Justin Du, Rice Middle School - Life Sciences
  • 1st - Rohan Thakur, Clark High School - Physical Sciences
  • 2nd - Shayan Mohanty, PSHS - Physical Sciences
  • Reserve - Param Jaggi, PESH - Physical Sciences

Rohan, Shayan and Param, along with six regional science fair winners from Plano ISD, have all qualified to attend ISEF.

Plano students Shayan Mohanty, Plano Senior High School; Rohan Thakur, Clark High School; and Param Jaggi, Plano East Senior High School.

In the Junior Division (middle school), students placing in the top 10 percent of the fair will have a chance to enter the BroadCom Masters competition in which finalists go to Washington, D.C., for a week to compete for a $50,000 scholarship. This was previously the Discovery Young Challenge competition.

Ms. Flack also praised the teachers who work with the science fair participants providing this opportunity to win scholarships and awards. She said, "I am so impressed with the number of campuses with qualifying students to attend the state science fair and with the successes that they have achieved."
