Hedgcoxe Elementary Student Council Wins 2nd National Award

For the second consecutive year, the Hedgcoxe Elementary School Student Council has captured the "Honor Council Excellence Award" sponsored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. The school was nominated by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA). Hedgcoxe is among 39 schools whose student councils were presented with the award in 2011.

"This is a prestigious honor and is indicative of the outstanding work done on this school campus to foster student leadership opportunities," wrote Carolyn Solomon, director of student leadership for TEPSA.
Hedgcoxe Student Council Projects
Following are a few of the many projects that the student council coordinates for their school. Watch the video (above) to learn more about these good works directly from the students and sponsrs.
- Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week proclaimed annually by the Plano City Council and Plano Mayor at the request of the Hedgcoxe Student Council.
- Wall of Honor with a red brick backdrop on which are displayed photos and biographies of Hedgcoxe students' family members who are currently or have served previously in the U.S. military armed forces.
- Canned food and toy drives for North Texas families in need
- Water for Life Campaign wrist band sales through the Kiwanis Club with proceeds benefiting construction of water wells in Africa.
- Lonestar Leadership summer program for council youth leaders
- Dress the Turkey Challenge in which students raised donations with sales of feathers to decorate large turkeys displayed in the school lobby. Proceeds benefited local charitable causes and campus beautification at Hedgcoxe.
- Week of Kindness during February, in which students participated in acts of kindness including valentine messages, letters to soldiers, magazine drive for children's hospital, children's book drive for medical clinic and toiletries drive for a homeless shelter.
- Stop a Minute and Read Together involved PTA members and students collecting gently used or new elementary level books for donation to the State PTA's SMART (Start Meeting and Read Together) program.
