The tribute will be held on Thursday, January 24, in the Williams High School Auditorium, 1717 17th Street in Plano. A pre-program tribute will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. program showcasing student performances.
Visitors will be welcomed by the Robinson Middle School Jazz Band. The Robinson Middle School Jazz Orchestra will greet guests in an art gallery featuring the finalists and winners in Plano ISD's 2012 MLK Art Contest.
During the program, elementary students will read their award-winning essays in honor of Dr. King, and secondary school student leaders will share inspirational messages about their community service and leadership.
The evening will also be highlighted by feature videos and musical performances by the Plano Children's Chorale and members of the Plano Senior High School Choir.
Awards presentations will include student winners of the Plano ISD 2012 MLK Art Contest, sponsored by Capital One, and Diversity Leadership Awards to be presented by Plano ISD's Diversity Advocacy Committee to school groups and individuals whose actions honor the work and ideals of Dr. King.
Dr. Myrtle Hightower, long time chair of the Plano ISD MLK Tribute Planning Committee and former Plano ISD school counselor, has led a group of staff and community members in preparing the annual community event. "We are delighted with the program that we have prepared for our community this year," said Dr. Hightower. "Our students, as always, will be the focus of this outstanding tribute to Dr. King."
The Plano ISD MLK Tribute is among several community activities planned for the week of January 20, 2013, surrounding the holiday honoring Dr. King's birthday. For more information about community events, visit the Plano MLK website.
