November 22, 2013

Plano ISD Student Performances & Awards
to Highlight Evening in Tribute to American Leader

The Plano Independent School District invites families and friends to a tribute to the great American leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the many outstanding leaders in Plano ISD and the community.

The tribute will be held on Thursday, January 23, in the Williams High School Auditorium, 1717 17th Street in Plano. Pre-program entertainment will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. program showcasing student performances.

The Plano Children's Chorale and Plano Senior High School choir students performed a moving rendition of "Let There Be Peace on Earth" as the culminating song for the 2013 MLK Tribute event. Directing the choir was Derrick Brookins, Plano Senior High School choral director.

Student performances and essay readings will highlight the evening. Awards presentations will include student winners of the Plano ISD 2013 MLK Art Contest, and Diversity Leadership Awards to be presented by Plano ISD's Diversity Advocacy Committee to school groups and individuals whose actions honor the work and ideals of Dr. King. Nominations are due December 17, 2013.

Dr. Myrtle Hightower, long time chair of the Plano ISD MLK Tribute Planning Committee and former Plano ISD school counselor, has led a group of staff and community members in preparing the annual community event. "We are delighted with the program that we have prepared for our community this year," said Dr. Hightower. "Our students, as always, will be the focus of this outstanding tribute to Dr. King."

The Plano ISD MLK Tribute is among several community activities planned for the week of January 20, 2014, surrounding the holiday honoring Dr. King's birthday. For more information about community events, visit the Plano MLK website.
