Dear Plano ISD eNews Subscriber:

In September of 2007, Plano ISD established a middle school grading and
assessment committee. The committee's objective was to consider grading
practices that are consistent with the philosophy that grades should be the
most accurate reflection of student knowledge and achievement.

Specifically, the committee has been looking into how the district's middle
schools can be more consistent in addressing the following areas:

- separating behavior from student achievement,
- dealing with late work,
- dealing with academic dishonesty, and
- how to assess homework assignments.

The committee has not made proposals or recommendations to the
Superintendent's Cabinet, thus no policy recommendations have been made to
the Board of Trustees, nor has there been any discussion regarding this
issue at the school board level.

There have been no changes to the current middle school grading and
assessment policies in Plano ISD. Any recommended changes, as a result of
the committee's work and inclusion of teacher input, would receive thorough
discussion at the administrative and school board level.

School principals will continue to meet to discuss these issues and solicit
feedback from teachers and parents.
