December 16, 2008 (first message)

Dear Plano ISD eNews Subscriber:

The following message is from Jeff Bailey, Deputy Superintendent of Schools.

The decision to have school according to our regular schedule today
(December 16) was made at approximately 5:30 a.m. The information was
posted on our district’s Web site, which is the best and most immediate
source of information regarding school schedules and inclement weather.

Although media venues usually only post school closings and delays, area
television news stations did make announcements about today’s decision to
operate on a normal schedule as a courtesy to our district and community.

In making decisions, we are always sensitive about the safety of our
students, families and district staff members who live within the district
and in other communities. We take all decisions very seriously and begin the
process of testing roads and discussing safety concerns as early as 3:30
a.m.

We are in regular contact with TxDOT.com, local law enforcement officials,
and the leadership of area school districts.

With a three-tier bus transportation schedule, Plano ISD cannot delay the
start of school as it would make the opening of the secondary schools as
late as mid-day. On most occasions, our choices are to operate school on a
normal schedule or close school.

Students who were absent from school today because of the weather related
conditions should bring a parent note requesting that the absence be excused
and that the student have an opportunity to make up the work. Also, students
who arrived late to school this morning will not be counted as tardy.

Once again, we continue to emphasize that the safety and well-being of our
students, families and employees are our top priorities. We appreciate your
support as we make these important decisions related to the operation of our
schools.
