Dear Plano ISD eNews Subscriber: Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Otto is proud to recognize 128 seniors who have achieved Semifinalist standing in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. The announcement was made today by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

These academically gifted students join approximately 16,000 of their peers from across the United States as Semifinalists in the 54th annual scholarship program. They now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 scholarships worth $35 million.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist level by fulfilling several requirements. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners, earning the Merit Scholar title.

More than 1.5 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools entered the 2009 National Merit Program by taking the 2007 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as the initial screen of program entrants.
