Plano ISD to Offer More Choices for Students
with Three Academies Scheduled to Open August 2013
Plano ISD is excited to introduce three very distinct student choice programs scheduled to be available for ninth and tenth grade students for the 2013-14 school year. Enrollment will grow to include eleventh and twelfth grade students in subsequent years. The district will provide transportation for all three programs.
Plano ISD Health Sciences Academy
The Plano ISD Health Sciences Academy will provide a required grades 9-10 medical course sequence at Williams High School followed by elective course options in grades 11-12 at Plano East Senior High School. This program will allow students to begin preparing for medical school or a health sciences career as early as ninth grade. “We’ve been hard at work over the last four to five months looking at an initiative for Williams High School and Plano East to utilize capacity at those campuses,” said Superintendent Matkin. “We’re looking at pursuing partnerships with both the hospital and college communities for a health sciences academy that would be a very dynamic option for our students.” Plano ISD Health Sciences Academy Website

The International Baccalaureate
Program is an academically challenging and balanced program of education with
final examinations preparing students for success in the postsecondary world of college and beyond. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
is normally taught over two years (11th and 12th grades) and has gained recognition and respect from the
world’s leading universities. “The International Baccalaureate program will be channeled into a four-year setting at one school as a means to strengthen the experience of our students who choose to participate in the IB Diploma program,” said Superintendent Richard Matkin. This program, serving grades 9-12, will be housed at Plano East Senior High School. IB World School at Plano East Senior High School Website
Plano ISD Academy High School
In 2011, Plano ISD’s Academy Visioning Committee recommended the use of academy models and defined what would ultimately become Plano ISD’s first academy. This academy high school will use problem-based learning in the science, technology, engineering, digital arts and math context as the instructional method. The academy, to be located at 1701 Alma Drive in Plano, is designed as a grades 9-12 standalone high school program. The visioning committee anticipated that this first academy would be a template for future academic offerings, now realized in the two aforementioned programs. Plano ISD Academy High School Website
