Quality Early Childhood Program

The Plano ISD Early Childhood Schools provide a language and literacy enriched environment where children have hands-on opportunities for learning. Our child-centered program follows the developmentally appropriate practices outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The curriculum framework follows the Texas Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines and provides an instructional program that is vertically aligned with the Kindergarten Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

A Typical Day

  • Welcome/Arrival: Children are welcomed and then independently select activities as they arrive in the classroom.
  • Circle Time: Your child joins with classmates to talk about the day.  Students are engaged in writing, language and mathematics instruction.
  • Work Time: Children choose from activities in the centers, which include dramatic play, table toys, blocks, art, sensory table, library and computers. Learning is child-centered through play facilitated by the staff.
  • Clean Up: Your child learns the importance of concluding activities, putting away materials and cooperating with others.
  • Small Group Instruction: Children receive intentional instruction on targeted objectives in a small group setting.  Students are taught language, literacy, and mathematic concepts and skills through a variety of instructional strategies.
  • Outdoor Learning/Activity Room:  Energetic outdoor play provides opportunities for children to develop large muscles, to engage in social interactions, and to experience nature.  Children also learn self-management by following rules and safety guidelines.
  • Music/Movement: Your child will experience music and physical activities in the classroom, the activity room and on the playground.  Learning to follow rules and safety guidelines as well as building large motor skills will accompany the fun students enjoy.
  • Story Time: Teachers read to children in large and small groups. Reading enhances listening comprehension, stimulates thought-provoking questions and conversation, and develops concept of print and vocabulary.
  • Dismissal: Children are encouraged to review the day's events and independently collect their belongings.

Curriculum

The Plano ISD Early Childhood Schools use the framework of the 202 student expectations in the Texas Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines.  These instructional objectives fall into the categories of language and literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, physical development, fine arts, personal and social development, health and safety, and technology.  The Texas Education Agency's website provides more detailed information about these Guidelines:

Residency / Student Admission

A student must be three or four years old on or before September 1 of that school year to attend as a tuition-supported prekindergarten student.  Children who are five years old on or before September 1 are eligible to attend public school kindergarten and are not eligible to participate in any prekindergarten program at the Early Childhood School.

Children living within the Plano ISD community are eligible to attend as tuition-supported students. There are a designated number of openings for these tuition-supported students. Students who meet eligibility criteria for state or federally funded programs attend at no charge. Age requirements may differ for these programs.

You must reside in Plano ISD boundaries for your child to attend the Early Childhood School. You may call the District office at (469) 752-8124 if you are unsure if your home is within Plano ISD boundaries. Proof of residency is required at time of registration; please include a copy of your electric or gas bill.

As a public school system, the Plano schools welcome all students who live within the boundaries of the Plano Independent School District and meet state age and health requirements. Students moving into the district during the summer may call their school to register before the start of the school year. Students who move into the district during the school year should make an appointment to enroll.

The natural parent, legal guardian or other person having legal control under a court order must enroll a student. (any person who is not the natural parent or is not designated guardian of the child by a court order must register with the office of Student Services prior to enrolling the student). The person enrolling the student must present their driver's license or department of transportation identification card at the time of registration.

If a family has not yet moved into the school district but is building or purchasing a home within the district boundaries, a Certificate of Eligibility Form must be completed and the contract for purchase must be submitted to the office of Student Services prior to enrolling.
