Carpenter Middle School Teacher Named Texas
ESL Educator of the Year
Story and photos by Mary Gorden
Chrissi Cawthon is proof positive that big things come in small packages. Five years ago, the petite Baylor University graduate was prepared to join the family business, putting her newly-secured fashion degree to use.
A twist in fate, however, brought her face-to-face with middle school ESL (English as a Second Language) students in the classroom, and she became hooked on teaching. "I fell in love with the kids," explained the gregarious educator who, based on her dedication to her school and district ESL programs, has captured the 2009 Bilingual/ESL Secondary Teacher of the Year award from the Texas Association for Bilingual Education.
District: How do you distinguish yourself as an ESL teacher?
Chrissi: I think that it is important to give students a choice in what they read and write. I believe in a student-driven, teacher-facilitated learning environment that keeps students passionate about learning. In an ESL classroom, two to three lessons may be underway so that students who are in three different grades, at various reading levels and who speak several different languages are learning simultaneously.
Digest: What is an example of choice and student-driven learning in your classroom?
Chrissi: Our "Book Talks" program has significantly strengthened reading skills of students. This is an idea that I started in ESL classrooms, and it has taken off district-wide. Students choose the books that we read. These are students who may have had the lowest reading test scores and hated to read when they arrived on the first day. By the end of the school year, they love to read.
Digest: What are some of the students' book club choices this year?
Chrissi: Artemis Foul about a child prodigy, Dork Diaries, I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You about an all-girl spy school.
Digest: How do you find inspiration for improving teaching in your classroom?
