124 Seniors Named 2018 National Merit Semifinalists

Plano ISD joins with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in recognizing 124 students who have been awarded semifinalist standing in the 63rd Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These Plano ISD students are among 16,000 high school seniors who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $32 million to be awarded next spring.

Ten Mark of Excellence Winners Awarded by the Foundation for Music Education

September 15

From a total of 278 high school and middle school musical ensemble entries, Plano ISD had ten winners in the 2017 Mark of Excellence competition awarded by the Foundation for Music Education. See photo gallery. In this competition which is entered by recordings, the top 25 percent of entrants are selected as national winners and the second 25 percent receive commended honors.

Plano West Speech and Debate, Wins First Place Sweepstakes

September 8-9

At the 29th Annual Grapevine Classic at Grapevine High School, Plano West Senior High students won first place sweepstakes. This tournament draws competitors from across the country to earn “bids” to the prestigious Tournament of Champions, the premiere high school speech and debate national championship, held each May at the University of Kentucky. Students Make Their Mark on International Dot Day

September 15

Plano ISD students celebrated International Dot Day in September by "making their mark" along with 10,060,033 children in 170 countries. International Dot Day is a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, which began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot on September 15, 2009. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark."

Parent Education Nights have been scheduled (for October 12, Plano West Library; October 26 Vines High School Presentation Room; and November 7, Plano East Cafeteria) to provide information on keeping teens safe. All three events are identical. Time for each session is 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.

School Board Update
The Plano ISD Board of Trustees met in a work session at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19, at the Plano ISD Administration Building, 2700 W. 15th Street. The agenda, with links to supporting documents, is posted on BoardBook. The next meeting of the board is scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 3.
