2020-2021 Academic Calendar Approved by the Board of Trustees
December 10, 2019
Plano ISD’s school calendar for 2020-2021 was approved at the December school board meeting. The calendar features two fewer days for students and teachers, which was done with the Plano ISD Strategic Plan in mind, and aligns more closely with the number of days area districts attend school. The new calendar allows the district to offer a more competitive compensation plan for teachers by reducing the number of teacher workdays. The reduction in days comes with no reduction in salary or change in the length of the teacher workday. It is accomplished by starting instruction five minutes earlier at the early childhood, elementary and middle school levels. School hours for high and senior high schools remain unchanged.
Many factors were considered during the calendar development period, which began with a community survey in September. Considerations included: balancing grading periods and semesters; length of school day/instructional minutes; extended planning/professional learning time; exam and testing calendars; survey and stakeholder input; alignment with dual credit/Collin College; and ending the school year before Memorial Day. The 2020-21 calendar features a Wednesday, August 12, 2020 start date and a Thursday, May 27, 2021 end date. Other features include a full week break at Thanksgiving and spring break on March 8-12, 2021.
