Mr. Jason Tucker - Director of Bands/Music Department Chair

I have been Director of Bands since the school opened in 1999 and the and Music Department Head since 2000. Before teaching at Rice, I was the Assistant Band Director at Vivian Field Middle School in the Carrollton/Farmers Branch Independent School District.

The Rice Raven Bands have consistently earned University Interscholastic League Sweepstakes awards as well as numerous Best in Class and Best in Contest awards at invitational festivals. The Rice Middle School band has advanced to the Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band area finals seven times and was recognized as a State Honor Band Finalist in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2017. In 2012, the Rice Middle School Band was named the Outstanding Texas School Band Program by the Texas chapter of the American School Band Directors Association. In 2014, the Rice Middle School Band was the sole recipient of the prestigious Sudler Silver Cup awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation.

I am very proud to have been named the 2004 Teacher of the Year for Rice Middle School and to have been inducted as a Life Member of the Texas PTA in 2008. I was most recently honored to receive the Mirabeau Lamar Award for Excellence in Education from the Plano Masonic Lodge No. 768. My professional affiliations include the Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Texas Jazz Educators Association, National Bandmasters Association, the American School Band Directors Association, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to serve as an adjudicator and clinician across Texas, and I have presented professional clinics for the Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and The Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference.

I have been married to my lovely wife, Cyndi, for 25 years. We have two children. Our oldest is an elementary art teacher in Frisco ISD, and our youngest recently graduated from Plano West Senior High. In my free time, I enjoy fishing, camping, golf, home improvement projects, and motorcycling.
