Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Scott Sommer

Welcome!  During an 18 year career in radio as an DJ/announcer, traffic reporter, and talk-show producer, I earned my Master degree in History from UNT and transitioned into teaching.  I've been teaching since 1993 and am certified in a variety of subject areas, including English as a Second Language, Special Education, English, and History.  I spent 7 years in the Little Elm School District teaching several subjects, and serving as the district coordinator for the ESL program.  I came to Rice Middle School in 2000 and found a wonderful home!  I am passionate about our nation's history and have had the pleasure of sharing this with my students at Rice over the years.  I teach 8th grade PACE and on-level U.S. History, and am the Gifted Specialist at Rice.  I also sponsor our remarkable Whiz Quiz Teams.  In addition to my duties here at Rice, I serve the district as a principal curriculum writer for the PACE 8 and US History 8 curricula.

I have been married for for 37 years, and my wonderful wife and I raised three boys who are now all in their twenties and living in Texas and Colorado.
