Director of Bands, Plano East Senior High, Plano, Texas
Evelio Villarreal is currently the Director of Bands at Plano East and serves as cluster leader for the East Cluster Band Program. Prior to his appointment as Director of Bands, he served as an Associate Director at Plano East. As a music educator for 41 years, Mr. Villarreal has experience as a percussion instructor and band director in the Duncanville, Austin and San Angelo Independent School Districts and served on the percussion staff of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from Rockford, Illinois.
Bands under his direction have consistently been awarded the “Sweepstakes Award” for Superior Ratings in University Interscholastic League Marching, Concert and Sight Reading contests and been named “Best In Class” at nationally adjudicated festivals throughout the United States. In 2012, the Plano East Marching Band was awarded the Sudler Shield by the John Philip Sousa Foundation for world class excellence. In 2015, the Plano East Wind Ensemble was awarded the Sudler Flag of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation for continued excellence in concert performance. In 2017, the Plano East Band Program was named the recipient of the Earl D. Irons Program of Distinction by Phi Beta Mu International for exceptional merit and achievement. The Plano East Wind Ensemble has been a finalist in Class 6A Honor Band competition by the Texas Music Educators Association in 2006, 2008, 2012 and 2016 and selected as a “National Winner” by the National Wind Band Honors Project in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2017. Percussion ensembles under his direction have performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and the National Percussion Festival.
Mr. Villarreal is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity, Percussive Arts Society and Phi Beta Mu International Band Fraternity serving on the State Board as an Area Representative. In 2000, he was selected for induction into the American School Band Directors Association, which honors outstanding band directors in the United States. In 2006, Mr. Villarreal was awarded the Legion of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation for excellence in teaching and contributions to high school bands. For many years, he served on State Board of the Texas Music Educators and the UIL Region Music Advisory Committee. Currently, he is serving as Vice-President of the Texas Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu. Mr. Villarreal is a multi-year honoree of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and in 2013, was awarded the PTA Honorary Lifetime Membership by the Plano East PTA. He maintains an active schedule as a clinician and adjudicator.
Mr. Villarreal is an educational artist/endorser for Innovative Percussion, Incorporated and a contributing author of the band method book, Essential Musicianship for Band, published by the Hal Leonard Corporation.
Mr. Villarreal holds the Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Angelo State University and a Master of Music Degree from Texas A&M-Commerce.
