Teaching Philosophy

Why I Teach?

I’ve always known I wanted to work with children, however teaching wasn’t what I initially envisioned myself doing. For many years, I planned to be a pediatrician, with my driving force always being to help kids grow. When it came to choosing a college, I made the pivotal decision to enroll in the education program at the University of North Texas. This choice aligned with my passion for working directly with children and supporting their development in a classroom instead of a hospital. Over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate my on a whim decision and feel that teaching has made me into the best version of myself. Today, my teaching is rooted in relationships and being a consistent, caring presence for my students. I want to be someone they can trust and feel supported by while also maintaining high academic expectations.

Core Beliefs About Teaching and Learning

I believe every student deserves to be heard and encouraged to take risks and learn from their mistakes. I believe in providing intentional differentiation so each student can grow not just academically but socially, no matter where they’re at. I challenge my students to strive to meet high expectations while creating an environment that celebrates curiosity, a sense of wonder, and a genuine love for learning. Goal setting, both academically and personally, is an essential part of my classroom culture. I want my students to reach their full potential and strive to meet their goals.

How My Beliefs Shape My Teaching Style

My beliefs shape my teaching style in how I build my close relationships with my students every single day. I’ve created a classroom environment that feels safe to share ideas, learn from silly mistakes, and ask questions. I lead my team in intentional planning through flexible grouping, target instruction, and enriching opportunities to meet all our students' needs. I maintain high expectations for myself and my team by providing our grade level with hands-on learning across subjects, meaningful discussions, and ample opportunities for growth.

What Makes Me an Outstanding Teacher

Over the past five years at Aldridge, I have intentionally sought out opportunities to serve beyond my classroom to not just support my students but also our staff. I have been the Science Collaborative Team Chair for the past three years, where I helped lead science instruction through vertical alignment across grade levels and coordinated our school’s science fair. Most recently, I accepted the role of Sunshine Committee lead and contributed as a member of our PBIS team to create fun opportunities for our staff to connect, feel supported, and to build up our campus school culture to benefit classroom behavior. I have served as the Fourth Grade Team Leader for the last two years, mentoring new teachers in our grade level and providing them a space to grow in their practice. In these roles, I try to bring positivity, adaptability, and a solution-based mindset to my campus. I am, as my coworkers describe, tech savvy, dependable, and can be relied upon for support, collaboration, and a listening ear. This experience reflects my commitment to fostering a strong and connected community at Aldridge, where both my students and our staff can be successful.

Rewards of Teaching

The greatest reward of teaching to me has been the special connections I have built with both my students and my colleagues. In my school community, I have made lifelong friends with my fellow educators who support and inspire me, but also challenge me to grow every single year. My relationship with my students is equally meaningful. One especially powerful moment came to me my first year when I taught a student who, like myself, has Type 1 diabetes. Being able to support this student through shared experience was incredibly rewarding, especially seeing them now using the same insulin pump that I use and attending the very same diabetes summer camp I once attended at their age. Students in lower grades often know me and express their excitement about the possibility of being in my class one day, a reflection of the relationships I build outside of my own classroom. These connections affirm that teaching isn’t just about the lessons taught; it leaves a lasting personal impact.

Teaching As Purpose

Teaching is more than just showing up and educating kids about math, reading, science, and social studies. It is a purpose grounded in connection, growth, commitment, and service. My teaching philosophy centers on the relationships I form, keeping my expectations high, and creating a classroom that every student wants to be a part of and feels inspired to learn in. Each day, I am reminded that what I do matters, big or small. It is this purpose that guides me to be a teacher worth Teacher of the Year.

Principal's Recommendation

To the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee:

It is with great pride and confidence that I recommend Ms. Megan Bonifacio for Plano ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year. While I have not had the opportunity to work alongside Ms. Bonifacio for an extended period of time, it became immediately clear—through observation, staff feedback, and family voice—that she is the kind of educator who leaves a lasting imprint on the hearts and minds of her students.

Ms. Bonifacio is consistently described as a teacher who sees the good in every child and intentionally pours into them—academically, emotionally, and personally. Her students feel known, valued, and believed in. Families speak of her not simply as a teacher, but as a trusted partner in their child's growth. That level of trust is not accidental; it is earned through daily actions rooted in care, high expectations, and genuine connection.

In the classroom, Ms. Bonifacio creates a learning environment where students are challenged and supported in equal measure. She holds high academic expectations while ensuring students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and persevere through challenges. Her belief in her students is evident in the way she speaks to them, plans for them, and advocates for them. She recognizes potential—even when students may not yet see it in themselves—and she works relentlessly to help them grow into confident learners.

Beyond academics, Ms. Bonifacio exemplifies what it means to be an educator who teaches the whole child. She models empathy, integrity, and kindness, helping students develop not only as scholars but as people. Her influence extends beyond her classroom walls; she contributes positively to campus culture and collaborates meaningfully with colleagues in service of student success. Teacher of the Year is not simply about excellence in instruction—it is about impact. Ms. Bonifacio's impact is evident in the relationships she builds, the confidence she instills, and the lasting impression she leaves on students and families alike. She represents the very best of Plano ISD educators: committed, compassionate, reflective, and deeply student-centered. I am proud to recommend Ms. Megan Bonifacio for Plano ISD Teacher of the Year and believe she would represent Aldridge Elementary—and this district—with distinction.;

Sincerely,
