Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every child is creative, every voice matters, and every student deserves a space where they feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and grow. Art is more than a subject—it is a language, a retreat, and a powerful way for students to discover who they are. In my art classroom, I strive to build not only artists but confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals.

For 22 years, I have had the privilege of teaching in the same school, the same building, and the desks have supported thousands of small hands learning to believe in themselves. This consistency has allowed me to build deep relationships with families, watch siblings grow, and become a steady presence in a constantly changing world. I am proud to be a familiar face for students who need stability, encouragement, and someone who truly knows them.

I am also a product of Plano schools, and now a proud teacher in the same community that raised me. Teaching in Plano is personal. These are my people, my neighbors, and my home. I understand the values, the expectations, and the heart of this community because I grew up here. That connection fuels my commitment to give my very best to each student, every day. I am not just teaching in Plano, I am giving back to the place that shaped me.

Becoming a parent has profoundly influenced the way I teach. Having my own children has deepened my empathy, patience, and understanding. I see my students not only as learners, but as someone’s entire world. I teach with the awareness that every child walks in with a story, a family, and emotions they may not yet have words for. This perspective guides the way I speak to students, the grace I offer, and the high expectations I hold with kindness. I teach them the way I would want my own children to be taught—with love, respect, and belief in their potential.

In my art room, process is just as important as product. I celebrate effort, originality, and courage over perfection. I encourage students to think critically, solve problems creatively, and express themselves authentically. Whether a student considers themselves “artistic” or not, I make it my mission to help them find success and pride in their work. Art is often the place where students who struggle elsewhere finally shine, and I protect that space fiercely.

I believe classroom culture is everything. I work intentionally to create an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and joyful. Laughter is encouraged. Mistakes are expected. Differences are celebrated. My students know they are safe to be themselves, and that their ideas are valued. When students feel seen and supported, they are willing to take risks—and that is where true learning happens.

Teaching is not just my career; it is my calling. After 22 years, I am still excited to open the door each morning. I am still inspired by my students. I am still learning. I am still growing. To be considered for Teacher of the Year is an incredible honor, and I am grateful to be part of a profession that allows me to shape lives, build confidence, and make a lasting impact—one piece of art, one child, and one day at a time.

Principal's Recommendation

Dear Teacher of the Year Selection Committee:

It is my honor and privilege to recommend Kristina Brancato, our art teacher at Beverly Elementary, for Plano ISD's Teacher of the Year. As principal, I have the opportunity to observe many talented educators, and Kristina consistently stands out for creativity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to students and staff.

Mrs. Brancato brings learning to life through art. Their classroom is a place where creativity thrives, students feel valued, and imagination is encouraged. Lessons are thoughtfully planned, engaging, and developmentally appropriate, allowing all students—regardless of ability or background—to experience success. Through art, Kristina helps students build confidence, problem-solving skills, and a love of learning that extends far beyond the classroom.

Beyond instruction, Kristina is an incredibly helpful and collaborative member of our campus community. She is always willing to support colleagues, contribute to school-wide events, and step in wherever needed. Whether designing displays that celebrate student work, assisting with campus initiatives, or offering encouragement and support to others, Kristina exemplifies professionalism and a true team-first mindset.

Most importantly, Mrs. Brancato builds strong, positive relationships with students. She creates a welcoming environment where students feel safe to take risks, express themselves, and grow as individuals. Students look forward to art class, and their pride in their work is a direct reflection of Kristina's encouragement and passion.

Mrs. Kristina Brancato represents the very best of our profession. Her creativity, helpful nature, and dedication to students and staff make them exceptionally deserving of the Teacher of the Year recognition. I offer my strongest recommendation without reservation.

Sincerely,

Karen WIlliams
