Teaching Philosophy

Since my first days as a preschool student, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I loved playing school with my sister and friends growing up, and would beg to be the teacher. As I grew up, each teacher I had inspired me more and more to follow my dream. I was so fortunate to have so many incredible teachers who served as role models. They showed patience, compassion, and genuine care for each of their students. I loved school and would be excited to go back each day. Their influence not only shaped my love of learning but also my belief that teachers can truly have a lasting impact on a child’s life.

However, it was a difficult experience during my eighth-grade year that ultimately solidified my calling as a future teacher. I was being bullied, and some friends reported it to a teacher, who was also the vice principal and a close family friend. My friends went to her, hoping for help. Instead, I was told that it was my fault I was being bullied. It was one of the most defining moments in my life. I knew exactly what my future looked like. I was going to be the teacher that I needed growing up, but did not always have. I made a promise to myself that day that every child who enters my classroom will feel loved and heard. I promised myself that no child would ever feel dismissed, blamed, or fear speaking up.

My philosophy of teaching is centered on creating a classroom where students feel safe, valued, loved, and supported. I believe that before academic learning can take place, students need to know that they are cared for unconditionally. We are not only developing academic skills in first grade, but they are also learning how to handle and navigate their emotions, friendships, and self-confidence. I have been blessed to watch and help students change their mindsets and boost their self-confidence.

My beliefs about teaching are reflected each day in my personal teaching style. I prioritize building strong relationships from even before their first day in first grade. I intentionally create a warm and inclusive classroom environment where everyone feels safe and included. I greet my students every morning with enthusiasm, and end every day with the same phrase: “I love you, I’m proud of you, and I will miss you until tomorrow.” We celebrate growth, effort, and perseverance daily. I strive to help students recognize their own progress and build confidence in their abilities.

What makes me an outstanding teacher is my commitment to being present for my students, not only during the school day, but beyond it as well. I want my students to know they can always count on me. This is evident in the lasting relationships I maintain with former students, many of whom continue to come see me to share both their successes and challenges in their lives.

Teaching is not just my career; it is my purpose in life. Being named my campus’ Teacher of the Year was a huge honor, but nothing was more meaningful than reading my nominations. As someone who struggles to accept compliments or recognition, seeing myself through someone else's eyes was a true gift. It was so moving to see that what I strive to achieve in my classroom every day shines through, and my coworkers can see what I struggle to see in myself. I will continue to teach with compassion, dedication, and grace, striving every day to be the teacher my students need—just as I once needed myself.

Principal's Recommendation

To the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee:

Emilee Sallurday is a truly exceptional educator—she is what we lovingly call the SUNSHINE of our campus. Her positivity, warmth, and unwavering dedication brighten every space she enters and uplifts everyone around her. Emilee not only brings a deep love and appreciation for teaching, but she also demonstrates an exceptional understanding of what her students need to feel nurtured, supported, and successful both academically and  emotionally.

Her ability to build meaningful relationships, create safe and welcoming learning environments, and inspire students to reach their full potential is unmatched. Emilee leads with heart, skill, and a quiet strength that makes a profound impact on her students and her colleagues.

It is with great respect for Emile that I extend this letter of  recommendation for Teacher of the Year.
