Teaching Philosophy

Growing up in Plano ISD, I never thought that teaching in the district would become a full-circle moment. My teacher definitely left an impact, and especially all my art teachers. When I was little, my first career choice was to be a nurse. I quickly realized I was not understanding the material, and my decision to become a nurse came to an end. I also struggled with a learning disability and in high school, I didn't know how to cope with feeling excluded. I mention this because I had to take extra classes and I couldn't take my favorite electives. As a teenager, this was hard and I felt as if the teachers were against me, but looking back, they were trying to help because they knew it would benefit me in the future. Throughout my high school experince after feeling at times hopeless, my joy was always in fine arts. To this day, I realized that I wanted to be an art teacher because it would be an opportunity to encourage students.

As an art teacher, I have grown to enjoy teaching art and especially to elementary students. My goal was to find a position in middle school, but I am currently in elementary school. That is still a goal of mine, to transfer to a secondary position and help students achieve their goals. I was very timid to teach elementary, but if anything, the students have taught me a lot of lessons, and I'm learning new stuff about myself. My goal now is to have my students take away from the lesson and remember their experience. Since this is a young group of kids, a lot of them don't know if they'll continue to take art in secondary school, so having those fun experiences will hopefully help them one day decide, "I should take art as an elective, I remember how fun it was when I was in elementary". Not only is art fun, but it is also a fundamental part of day-to-day access. For example, with the younger students, for me it's really important that they understand the different color theory names, the names of the lines and the materials they are using. As well, are the students mastering using the materials correctly or cleaning up after themselves? When they can acquire these skills, the students will be able to have more creativity, freedom and hands-on experience when they are older.

My teaching methods have changed throughout the years, and with each year I like to apply something new. For example, in my first year, I found myself talking a lot and showing them examples of art, but I realized that they were not engaged, and I didn't let them add their creative twist, and most importantly, the outcome was not what I wanted. I knew I had to make a change in my lesson because I wanted my students to comprehend. I started to break things down for each lesson. Overall, my goals are that the students have fun, experience new techniques, and try their hand at activities, so they can also apply it to their lives.

As an art teacher, I didn't realize my own skills and creativity I can bring to each lesson. Some lessons don't go as planned, but I have come to realize that it's okay, and I get the chance to research and change those flaws. As well, my students in special education have also challenged me to research different ways to modify the lesson or the use of materials. The bilingual students who are new to this country, the same thing, learning a new language can be hard, but my favorite part is when those students start out shy, they start to break out of their shell. The students who have a learning disability, I don't mind relating to them and telling them stories about how I persevere when challanges aretough. The students who come to school to feel safe and loved, I hope that in the art room can feel like a kid and themselves. Everyone should feel included and in my school, I am honored to be able to teach all of them. I never imagined that the different kinds of students would change me to be a better teacher, but also to become the best version of myself.
