Plano ISD Alumnus Wins Four Emmy Awards for Broadcast News Reporting

Spencer Humphrey, a 2016 graduate of Plano East Senior High School, received four Emmy Awards in July 2026 from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Heartland Chapter), each recognizing his individual reporting as a journalist at KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City.

Humphrey took home Emmys in the following categories:

  • Journalistic Enterprise
  • Societal Concerns
  • Business/Consumer Reporting
  • Sports Story

He also earned the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Political Journalism, presented at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in 2025.

Humphrey attended Plano ISD from kindergarten through grade 12, and he credits his teachers with supporting his lifelong inspiration to become a journalist. His years in Plano ISD classrooms gave him a foundation he says prepared him well for the rigor of college and the demands of daily journalism, from asking sharp questions to writing clearly under demanding deadlines.

Plano ISD prepared him to earn his degree at the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism, where he developed the reporting and investigative skills that now define his work at KFOR. In Oklahoma City, Humphrey has built a reputation for digging into stories that explain complicated issues for viewers.

Four Emmys in a single year is a significant honor for any journalist, and a proud moment for the Plano ISD community that helped shape him. Humphrey’s path from a Plano East classroom to a Mizzou journalism degree to Emmy-winning reporting is a powerful example of “District Made,” showing the lasting impact of a Plano ISD education.

Communication is critical, and having the knowledge to research important issues, keep track of up-to-the-minute information, and frame it both professionally and relatably are skills I developed as a Plano East Panther. High quality journalism sets the standard for keeping the viewers I serve informed, and I’m proud to be District Made.
