Plano ISD Celebrates 2026 Teachers of the Year

Plano ISD celebrated outstanding teaching at the 2026 Teacher of the Year Gala on Thursday, honoring the district’s top educators during National Teacher Appreciation Week. More than 1,200 educators, PTA representatives, district administrators, civic leaders and corporate sponsors attended the annual event, which highlighted exceptional service across the district. This year’s theme, “The Torch Begins Here,” reflected the powerful role teachers played in igniting curiosity and guiding students on their educational journeys.

During the ceremony, Plano ISD recognized the 2026 Teachers of the Year, the Marilyn Brooks Excellence in Education top 10 finalists and the district’s top elementary and secondary Teachers of the Year. Marilyn Brooks, for whom the award is named for her dedicated years as a Plano ISD teacher and administrator, was in attendance to personally recognize this year’s top 10 finalists for their leadership, instructional excellence and impact on students.

This year' top 10 finalists in no particular order are:

  • Heather Marek, Miller Elementary School
  • Alessandra Bradshaw, Mendenhall Elementary School
  • Kourtney Gergeni, Frankford Middle School
  • Danielle Davis, Otto Middle School
  • Emily Shollack, Stinson Elementary School
  • Stephanie Hirsh, Williams High School
  • Adia Barrientos, Wells Elementary School
  • Zarinah Hayes, Robinson Middle School
  • Ian Smith, Solomon Center

The district also presented the Counselor of the Year award. The recipient, Nina Yates of Bowman Middle School, was celebrated for her advocacy, compassionate leadership and dedication to student well-being.

The district’s top elementary and secondary Teachers of the Year received special recognition for their outstanding contributions, representing the highest level of professional excellence in Plano ISD. The Marylin Brooks Excellence in Education finalists were also honored for demonstrating exceptional instructional practice and a steadfast commitment to student growth.

This year's Elementary Teacher of the Year is Heather Marek from Miller Elementary School. The 2026 Secondary Teacher of the Year is Stephanie Hirsch from Williams High School.

Plano ISD expressed appreciation to the many corporate and community sponsors whose generosity made the evening possible. Their support helped celebrate the educators who exemplified the heart of the district’s mission and carried the torch of inspiration forward for future generations.
