Two Plano West Students Named 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Semifinalists

Two students from Plano West Senior High School are being recognized among the nation’s most accomplished graduating seniors after being named semifinalists for the 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Jerry Wang and Annie Zhou earned the prestigious distinction through a highly competitive national selection process led by the U.S. Department of Education. The program honors students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, service and character, placing the Plano West seniors among an elite group of high-performing students from across the country.

Established in 1964 by executive order of the President, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program annually honors some of the most accomplished students in the country. Each year, approximately 4,000 graduating seniors are identified as candidates based on extraordinary academic performance, particularly on the SAT or ACT. From there, students move through a highly competitive selection process that evaluates academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, personal character and student essays. Ultimately, up to 161 students nationwide are selected as U.S. Presidential Scholars.

Being named a candidate places Jerry and Annie among an elite group of students across the nation and reflects years of hard work, perseverance and commitment to excellence both inside and outside the classroom.

The selection process extends far beyond test scores. According to the U.S. Department of Education, candidates submit applications that include essays, self-assessments, transcripts and school evaluations, while reviewers consider leadership, service and overall impact alongside academic success. Approximately 500 to 650 students advance as semifinalists before the final scholars are chosen by the Commission on Presidential Scholars.

For more than six decades, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program has celebrated students who demonstrate excellence not only in academics, but also in innovation, creativity, leadership and service to others. Fewer than 200 students nationwide receive the final honor each year.

Plano ISD proudly celebrates Jerry Wang and Annie Zhou for this remarkable accomplishment and the example they set for students across the district.
