March 23, 2018 - CTE Awards Update

 

Plano ISD students excel in Career and Technical Education Competitions with 169 students advancing to state level competitions. Congratulations to students and staff on their results in regional and area competitions. Find out more about Career and Technical Education at Plano ISD.

BPA (Business): 91 students competed at area competitions with 45 advancing to state and 14 advancing to national competition.

DECA (Marketing): 65 students competed at area with 41 advancing to state and 11 students advancing to nationals.

FCCLA (Culinary/Fashion Design): 8 students competed at regionals with 6 advancing to state.

FFA (Agriculture): 55 students competed at district with 23 advancing to area and 5 to state in leadership development events.

HOSA (Health Care): 75 students competed at area with 30 advancing to state.

SkillsUSA (Culinary/Auto Tech/Video/Graphic Design): 48 students competed at regionals with 42 advancing to state.

Plano ISD had 45 students compete at the Business Professionals of America State Conference and Competition representing Shepton High School, Plano Senior High and Plano West Senior High. The competition was held in Corpus Christi where over 5,000 Texas students competed. The following students advanced to BPA nationals which will be held in Grapevine, Texas in May:

DECA (Emerging Leaders and Entrepreneurs)

DECA is a nationally recognized organization that provides marketing leadership experiences. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Plano ISD had 41 students compete at the DECA State Conference and Competition representing Plano and Plano West Senior High Schools. Just under 5,000 students from across Texas competed. The following students advanced to nationals which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia in April:

FFA

The National FFA Organization is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

FFA students competed at the Collin County Livestock Show in January and took top places in poultry, rabbits, cattle, swine, lambs, horticulture and agriculture mechanics. The top 33% of the student’s in each division qualified for the auction, and in total, Plano ISD FFA students brought in over $30,000. Students excelling at the show included:

  • Quinton Artho, Plano West Senior High, fifth out of over 50 pigs at the San Antonio Stock Show; sale qualifier, his pig sold for $1,600
  • Sarah Deibert, Plano West Senior High, grand champion fine wool cross
  • Chloe Frohock, Wilson Middle School, reserve grand champion lamb, reserve champion medium wool and reserve champion lamb showmanship (see photo with lamb)
  • Chloe Frohock, Wilson Middle School, first out of 68 lambs at the San Antonio Stock Show; sale qualifier, her lamb sold for $2,600
  • Chloe Frohock, Wilson Middle School, ag mechanics livestock and wildlife division winner
  • Alex Hall, Plano East Senior High, grand champion rabbits
  • Mauriana Herrera, Plano East Senior High, third out of 41 at the San Antonio Stock Show; breeding gilt - first out of 44 at the San Angelo Stock Show; one of 100 breeding gilts out of 1,300; her animal sold for $500
  • Michaela Nix, Plano West Senior High, reserve champion Yorkshire pig
  • Callie Nunan, Plano West Senior High, grand champion chickens
  • Mary Philley, Plano East Senior High- grand champion corsage
  • Riley Pittman, Aldridge Elementary, champion junior ag mechanics showmanship
  • Caroline Schaeffer, Plano West Senior High, reserve champion floral design challenge
  • Multiple students placed in the top three in the lamb, goat, cattle, ag mechanics, floral, and pig show

SkillsUSA

The SkillsUSA Regional Competition took place Waco where CTE students from Plano East and Plano West competed. Plano East Culinary Arts had 12 students compete and came home with three gold, eight silver and one bronze medals.

Audio Video Production

Plano West Senior High audio video production students won five gold medals, two silver, two bronze medals and one “best of show” awards. All of the video production job exhibits and advertising design campaign job exhibit entries advance to state competition in Corpus Christi in early April.

Auto Tech

Plano East Senior High auto technology had seven students compete in quiz bowl returning with silver medals and a bronze medal in automotive service technology.

Culinary Arts

12 Plano East Senior High culinary arts students competed and came home with three gold, eight silver and one bronze medals.

FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America)

FCCLA is a nationally recognized organization that provides community service and leadership experiences. The regional competition was held in Waco, Feb. 8-10. 

Culinary Arts

Plano East culinary arts three-person team won a fourth place medal. They also came in third and fifth in the Cupcake Battle. The state FCCLA competition will take place in Dallas in early April.

Fashion Design

Plano West Fashion Design students competed for the first time this year and did very well earning a gold medal and all of their garments and portfolios qualifying for state.

UIL Film

The state award ceremony took place on February 28 in Austin.

HSA (Health Sciences Academy)

The Health Sciences Academy (HSA) students have been actively involved in their campuses and their community. The students have the opportunity to engage with community healthcare partners through guest speakers, field trips, and mentorship opportunities. Summer internships, volunteer and employment opportunities are being offered to students. The HSA students at Plano East are completing requirements for healthcare certifications in Emergency Medical Technicians, EKG Technician, Phlebotomy and Patient Care Technician. 

Students at Williams are completing prerequisite college courses to prepare for certifications at Plano East. Between symposiums, field trips to community healthcare sites, guest speakers, college professors, student organizations and required community service the students in the Health Sciences Academy are learning more than just the curriculum related to healthcare delivery.
