April 10, 2018 - Amy Bates, Director of Special Projects, Honored as Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by FIRST Robotics


Amy Bates, Director of Special Projects, was recognized as the North Texas FIRST Robotics Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. The award was presented at the Dallas Regional robotics competition, which was attended by more than 2,400 enthusiasts from Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and a team from Brazil.

In presenting the award, John Shellene, North Texas Regional Director of FIRST, stated that the award was, “In recognition for spending countless evenings and weekends mentoring students, recruiting volunteers and organizing events, including two FIRST LEGO League qualifying tournaments, one FIRST Tech Challenge qualifying tournament, as well as a new FIRST Robotics Competition off-season event. These events have provided opportunities for hundreds of students in the North Texas area to participate in and grow in their knowledge of STEM.”

FIRST Robotics is a non-profit organization whose mission is “To inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication and leadership. Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services Dr. Katrina Hasley describes Ms. Bates commitment as, "going above and beyond" in her support of the robotics programs in Plano ISD. Ms. Bates was also recognized with a certificate of recognition from the Plano ISD Board of Trustees for her dedication to Plano ISD Robotics at the April 10 School Board Meeting.
