Speech & Debate: Plano West UIL Congress Regional Contest Results
November 12, 2020
On November 10, Plano West Senior High students brought home the first, second and third prizes at the virtual University Interscholastic League (UIL) Congress contest. UIL Congress is an individual contest that models the legislative process of democracy, specifically, the United States Congress. Contestants draft legislation and research the docket of bills and resolutions dealing with real-world social and political policies prior to the contest to prepare their speeches.
At the tournament, students caucus in committees, deliver formal discourse on the merits and disadvantages of each piece of legislation and vote to pass or defeat the measures they have examined. Parliamentary procedure is used for discourse, and students extemporaneously respond to others’ arguments over the course of a session.
Congratulations to all participants and these Plano West Senior High student winners coached by Robey Holland, Plano West speech and debate teacher:
- First place, Pranav Pattatathunaduvil
- Second place, Angela Wang
- Third place, Tejas Bansal
