Important Community Update from the Board of Trustees
March 7, 2021
Dear Plano ISD Community,
In recent days we have heard from people in and outside of our district, expressing their grave concerns over the allegations of racially motivated harassment and bullying involving Plano ISD students. The Plano ISD Board of Trustees stands united in the belief that no child should be victimized in any manner, nor be subject to any form of bullying, harassment or intolerance.
The Board would like to reiterate the district’s dedication to caring for all students and staff members. With the recent off-campus incident at the forefront of our community’s concerns, please know that the Board maintains strict, legal policies that protect the welfare of our students, and that unequivocally prohibit bullying and harassment. Additionally, the Board stands firm against any acts of violence and racism, and believes that all children should feel safe, valued and respected.
We support this important investigation, which is well underway. Due to federal legal restrictions regarding the confidentiality of student information, Plano ISD is unable to release specific student information, including disciplinary actions. We can assure you that the appropriate measures have been taken to protect the victim and to investigate this matter from the district’s authority.
In accordance with state law and district policy, specific actions to date include:
- Providing notification of an alleged incident of bullying to the parents/ guardians of all parties immediately on the date of the report, with continued daily communication and additional written notification.
- Initiating a prompt investigation into the allegations, commencing on the date of the report. The school and district are working with the Plano Police Department and the investigation is ongoing.
- Adhering to all district protocols to work toward the completion of this investigation within ten district business days.
Plano ISD does not condone bullying, harassment, and/or threats against any student or any staff member. To that end, we intend to continue working with our parents, community and local law enforcement to resolve this concern while remaining focused on the success and wellbeing of our students.
Sincerely,
The Plano ISD Board of Trustees
