AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID helps students develop the academic habits they will need to be successful in middle school, high school, college and career. Students learn about organization, study skills, communication and self-advocacy in an age-appropriate and challenging way. Plano ISD has 24 elementary campuses serving 4,800 students and 22 secondary AVID campuses serving approximately 3,000 students.
AVID programs on elementary campuses create a strong college-going culture that encourages students to think about their college and career plans. AVID elementary takes a school-wide approach, by including all fourth and fifth grade students at a campus.
At the secondary level, the AVID elective focuses on rigorous academic preparation, student agency, opportunity and knowledge to prepare students for success in high school, college and career, especially students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
