Understanding GPA (Grade Point Average)
What is GPA?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average — a numerical summary of your high school academic performance.
It reflects how well you’ve done in your courses and helps communicate your achievement to colleges, scholarships, and future employers.
Plano ISD reports two types of GPA:
-
Cumulative GPA (4.0 scale): A student’s cumulative GPA includes all courses taken for high school credit, with some exceptions listed below.
-
Ranking GPA: A student's ranking GPA is calculated using only certain high school courses in English, math, science, and social studies that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) recognizes as eligible for graduation credit under the Foundation High School Program. For students graduating through the class of 2029, only the top 10% of students are ranked and given a ranking GPA.
