Suicide and Self Harm

We can all prevent suicide. There is hope. There is help.

If you or anyone you know is having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, seek help from a supportive adult.

Know the Warning Signs

  • Depressed or irritable mood
  • Withdrawing or isolating oneself
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Decreased interest or pleasure in activities
  • Change in appetite or weight
  • Feelings of hopelessness or having no reason to live
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Decreased concentration
  • Using drugs or alcohol
  • Recent thoughts of death or suicide

How to Support

  • Ask direct questions:
    • “Are you thinking about harming yourself or suicide?”
  •  Listen:
    • Take their answers seriously
  • Be Supportive and Be Present
  • Offer hope
  • Help connect to ongoing support
  • Follow-Up
