2024 TI Innovations in STEM Teaching Award Winners

During the May 7th board meeting, Plano Independent School District proudly honored its outstanding recipients for the 2024 Texas Instruments Foundation Innovations in STEM Teaching Awards. These prestigious awards, made possible through the generosity of the Texas Instruments Foundation, recognize teachers who show exceptional dedication and creativity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. 

Recognitions began with gratitude from Lisa Wilson, Deputy Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Life Readiness, expressing thanks to the Texas Instruments (TI) Foundation and the Plano ISD Education Foundation for their steadfast support of education. This year's ceremony highlighted the enduring partnership between industry and education, showcasing the profound impact of investing in teachers, who are the architects of knowledge and inspiration.

Afterward, Karen Buechman, Director of Career and Technical Education, approached the dias to unveil the finalists and winners, each chosen for their innovative teaching and dedication to student success. Among the finalists were Carlos Curry from Hendrick Middle School, Nina Doan from Bowman Middle School, Neha Jaimini from Rice Middle School and Alayna Schottlaender from Wilson Middle School, who were each awarded with a gift bag courtesy of the TI Foundation and the Plano ISD Education Foundation.

Amidst cheers, the spotlight fell on the three distinguished winners of the 2024 Texas Instruments Innovations in STEM Teaching Award, each celebrated for their extraordinary contributions. These educators received a $10,000 cash award $5,000 toward classroom technology and professional development, as well as another $5,000 as a personal cash award.

Ashley Rael - Schimelpfenig Middle School

Ashley Rael, a math teacher with 18 years of experience, exemplifies the transformative power of passionate teaching. Her approach, rooted in collaboration and student engagement, sparks curiosity and academic growth. Principal Kristen Kinnard praises Ashley's dedication to her students' intellectual and emotional well-being, inspiring them to embrace the possibilities of math.

Don Walker - Plano East Senior High School

Don Walker, a revered science educator with a decade of experience, fosters a culture of inquiry and discovery in his classroom. Students applaud his support and engaging lessons, while Principal David Jones commends his passion for STEM pathways and innovative teaching methods.

Robert Watson - Plano Senior High School

Robert Watson, an automotive technology teacher with 21 years of experience, goes beyond traditional education, instilling life skills and purpose in his students. CTE Coordinator Alex Ritter applauds Robert's commitment to student success, while Principal Jeff Banner highlights his role in expanding the Auto Tech program and providing invaluable opportunities for students.

“I want to congratulate our teachers on their hard work and making a difference in our students' lives,” said Dr. Theresa Williams. “I’m so proud of what you do – not just the content that you teach, but the manner in which you do it. You are all creating that safe learning environment where our students can grow, nurture and succeed.”
