ESL Teacher
I graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1991. I taught 6th grade for one year in Alabama before returning to my home state of Texas to teach 4th grade for five years. After having children, I took some years off from full-time teaching to be a mom and returned to the classroom in 2012 after working two years as a Special Education Assistant here at Dooley. All three of my children were Dooley Dragons, so it is great to be a part of a school that I love so much! When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our children and cherish those times even more now that our children are grown and two of them are married.
Dooley's ESL program and instruction for English language learners finds us continually developing our oral and written English skills. In ESL, we are working on English speaking and listening. We talk, read, write and actively listen to others.
In speaking, we are developing our BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) so that we can convey our thoughts, ideas, needs, and wants to those around us. This social language is what we use in our day-to-day communication at school, on the playground, in the classroom when talking with friends, and with our peers in a casual setting.
ESL students also receive instruction with language acquisition strategies which help develop Academic Language Proficiency or the content / curriculum / objectives of the student's present grade level. Academic English is the language necessary for success in school and is more demanding and complex than social English. Vocabulary, both spoken and that found in reading text, is developed through rich literature, class discussions, pictures, real-like objects and experiences.
In reading, we make predictions, read stories (fiction and non-fiction), have discussions, and then summarize what was read in the text. Our reading skills help us learn about the world around us. We are very proud of our ESL learners and their many accomplishments. It is, indeed, a privilege and a pleasure to teach the precious ESL students here at Dooley.
I'm excited for another year of learning and growing together!
