    May 21, 2020

    Plano ISD Class of 2020

Since releasing our Graduation 2020 plan, it has become necessary to provide further clarification. We want to make sure that every graduating senior and their family understand our plans for honoring and celebrating this momentous occasion.

When the District realized that we would be unable to host a traditional in-person graduation on the original dates, June 1 for Academy High School and June 6 for our three senior high schools, we quickly reached out to our venues to secure dates later in the summer and reserved July 21 for Academy High School and August 1 for our three senior high schools. These dates remain on the schedule.

Knowing the unpredictability of the virus and our public health crisis, the District also decided to proceed with plans for a hybrid graduation ceremony, hosted inside our schools instead of at a football stadium to avoid heat and possible weather delays. The hybrid graduation will allow our students and families to participate in a special celebration where they are able to walk the stage, receive their diploma from a family member and have a professional photo opportunity. This choice also allows us to produce a commemorative graduation ceremony video to share with students and families.

The District did evaluate graduation options including outdoor stadiums, however the size of our graduating classes provided complexities and limitations on venues as well as the type of graduation experience our seniors would have. The District also consulted with public health officials to weigh safety factors inherent in this situation again accentuated by the size of our graduating classes in any type of large social gatherings.

In-person graduation ceremonies scheduled on July 21 and August 1 will be held assuming the state of the pandemic and guidelines from health authorities and state agencies at that time are consistent with large group gatherings to safely accommodate our graduating classes and their guests.

We hope this helps clarify the serious consideration given to all graduation options before deciding upon the hybrid graduation in June and the in-person, indoor rescheduled event later in the summer as public health guidelines allow. Graduation details are provided below:
