Mar. 29, 2019 - CTE Update

Plano ISD students excel in Career and Technical Education (CTE) competitions with 143 CTE students who have advanced to state level competitions.

Overview

  • BPA (Business) - 91 students competed at area competitions with 42 advancing to state and 18 advancing to nationals.
  • DECA (Marketing) – 45 students competed at area competitions with 25 advancing to state.
  • FCCLA (Culinary/Fashion Design) – 3 students competed at regionals with 3 advancing to state.
  • FFA (Agriculture) - 74 students competed at district with 41 advancing to area and 3 to state in Leadership Development Events.
  • HOSA (Health Care) – 200 students competed at area with 41 advancing to state.
  • SkillsUSA (Culinary/Auto Tech/Video/Graphic Design) – 57 students competed at regionals with 29 advancing to state.

PWSH, BPA

Plano ISD students from Shepton, Plano Senior High and Plano West Senior High competed at the Business Professionals of America State Conference and Competition in Corpus Christi, Texas. Over 5,000 students statewide competed. The following students have advanced to the BPA Nationals which will be held in Anaheim, California in May.

FFA

Riley Pittman, Aldridge Elementary with ribbons

At the Collin County Livestock Show in January, FFA students took top places in poultry, rabbits, cattle, swine, lambs, horticulture and agriculture mechanics. The top 33% of the students in each division qualified for the auction. Students excelling at the show included:

  • Sarah Deibert, Plano West Senior High – Breed Champion Fine Wool
  • Chloe Frohock, Vines High School – Campion Senior ShowmenDean Fry, Plano Senior High School– Reserve Division Champion
  • Logan Payne, Clark High School – Reserve Grand Champion Heavyweight Rabbits, and Reserve Grand Champion Fryers
  • Riley Pittman, Aldridge Elementary – Division Champion/Champion Junior Showmen Shop Project
  • Sofia Reisinger, Plano West Senior High – Reserve Champion Shop Project
  • Multiple students placed in the top three in the lamb, ag mechanics, pig and chicken show

Plano West, Plano East and Plano Senior High competed at the Area V Leadership Development Events (LDE) contest. Plano West had 29 students compete at Area. The Plano West Green Hands Quiz team placed second at area and took sixth place at the state tournament. Plano Senior High Ag Advocacy, Greenhands Creed and Senior Quiz teams competed at the area competition.

HSA (Health Sciences Academy)

The Health Sciences Academy students have been actively involved in their campuses and their community. The students have the opportunity to engage with community healthcare partners through guest speakers, field trips and mentorship opportunities. Summer internships, volunteer and employment opportunities are being offered to students.

The HSA students at Plano East Senior High are completing requirements and clinical experiences for healthcare certifications as certified nurse aides, emergency medical technicians, EKG technicians, phlebotomists, central sterile processing technicians and patient care technicians. 

SkillsUSA

The SkillsUSA Regional Competition took place at Texas State Technical College in Waco. CTE students from Plano East Senior High Culinary Arts and Auto Technology competed, as well as Plano West Senior High Audio Visual and Fashion Design students. The students will be competing in the State SkillsUSA Competition in Corpus Christi in early April.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

Plano Senior High School was recently recognized as a PLTW Distinguished School. This honor was awarded to only 426 schools nationwide that demonstrate exemplary results from their PLTW programs. Plano Senior High School offers Engineering Science and Engineering Design and Development taught by Deb Strecker along with Aerospace Engineering taught by Suzanne Day.
