Welcome to Thomas Elementary Physical Education.  We are very pleased to have your child participating in our physical education and fitness classes.  Our program presents a variety of activities that teach wellness, fitness, basic skills, rhythms and dance, and sports that are appropriate for each grade level.  A balance between fitness activities and skill teaching is maintained throughout the school year.

We know that a well-planned physical education program will result not only in physical fitness, but also in a more positive self-image, more desirable social behavior, and the joy of feeling healthy.  Your child will also realize the positive impact good health has on life.  By following the safety standards, expectations, and class responsibilities found below, your child would have an enjoyable physical education experience.

To insure every student enrolled in the program acquires the maximum benefits under safe conditions, the responsibilities listed below have been developed.  A discipline procedure has also been developed to insure every student an equal chance to develop and reach his or her maximum potential.

    Class Responsibilities

Play fair!    Have fun!   Be safe!

    Safety Standards

All children participating in physical education and fitness classes will need to wear flat-soled tennis shoes.  Platform tennis shoes and tennis shoes with no back do not provide stability and are not acceptable for daily activities.  Hiking boots and shoes with thick soles and rugged tread are also not acceptable for daily activities.
We cannot allow the “wheelies” or “heelies” shoes to be worn in gym class.

Any girl who wears a dress or skirt will need to wear a pair of shorts/leggings underneath.

    Grading Policy

The physical education department grading system is based on district policy.  Each student in grades 3-5 will receive two grades each nine weeks, a grade based on effort and a letter defining citizenship exhibited.  Citizenship grades are based on behavior and attitude.  If your child cannot participate in class activities, please provide the physical education staff with a note.  If your child is excused from activities for five days or more, the note must come from a physician.

The best time to reach us is from 7:45-8:35. Feel free to leave a message on our voice mail anytime, and we will call you back.  Here’s to a great year!!
