AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Established more than 35 years ago with one teacher in a classroom, AVID today impacts more than 1.2 million students in 44 states and 16 other countries/territories.

Close the achivement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and global success.

Student Success Skills - encompassing communication skills (e.g. listening, speaking, writing), self-advocacy skills, note-taking strategies, critical thinking, and study skills.
Organizational Skills - both mental and physical; students learn to use organizational tools, as well as learn and practice skills around time management and goal-setting.
WICOR Lessons - emphasize instruction on writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to learn in all content areas.
Partnerships - among students, classrooms, grade levels, schools, feeder patterns, families, and communities.

This year students will be exposed to:
SMART Goals - Students will learn how to set goals that are Specific, Measureable, Action Oriented, Realistic, and have Time limits for academic/personal goals.
Organization - Students will continue to demonstrate the benefits of using their organizational tools for success. This includes using their binders, agendas/planners, dividers, pencil pouches, etc. In addition, students will use self-monitoring strategies such as keeping track of assignment and their learning objectives.
Note Taking - Students will become proficient in taking 2- and 3-column notes in all subject areas.
College Awareness - Students will learn the importance of a college education, career readiness, and the military.
Collaboration - Students will use various collaborative structures, including the use of scholarly langauge when working in groups.

Fostering a Growth Mindset
Mindset is very important when it comes to a student's approach to learning. A person with a growth mindset believes that success is a product. Success does not come only to those with talent and inherent ability. Hard work and perserverance are key factors in achievement.
