  • Overview

We believe all children should discover the beauty and majesty of music, and experience the pride that comes from a musical performance. Because of this belief, students will have the opportunity to perform in a grade level performance at least twice during their six years at Hightower. In addition, the Hightower Choir is open to any interested student at the beginning of their 5th grade year.

Hightower Elementary has had 19 students accepted as members of the Plano Children's Choir since our school opened. We have also had 29 students selected as members of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators National Honor Choir during the past 10 years.

During 2008-2009 school year, Hightower will have 12 students from 4th and 5th grade participating in the Metroplex Children's Choir Festival at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.

The Plano Independent School District uses the Kodaly (Ko-die) method of music instruction. The goal of the Hungarian based method is to promote music literacy through the use of folk tunes and the child’s own singing voice. Our goal is to help students discover that music is a language in which they can read, write, and think just as they do any other language. The process is a developmental and sequential one with new discoveries added in each grade level while all the time reviewing and practicing previously learned concepts and skills.
