In K-5 music classes we sing, dance, read, write, and play games and instruments on a weekly basis. Children attend music classes once per week for 50 minutes, and we use every minute to the fullest!
In addition to weekly music lessons, certain grades have extra music performances called programs - a show put on with the whole grade-level:
-
4th grade performed a Veteran’s Day celebration in November
-
2nd grade performed a show in March based on the book “How to Make an Apple Pie and See The World” by Marjorie Priceman. This show will be different every year so stay tuned for next year’s theme!
In 4th and 5th grade, students can volunteer for music groups after school; I alternate one year teaching choir then one year of instrumental ensembles so everyone can try both experiences before choosing a middle school elective the following year. These groups meet on Thursdays from 2:45-3:45 for many months during the year.
5th graders have an additional opportunity to be selected to be in Plano Children’s Chorale. This is an advanced choir made up of 5th grades all across Plano ISD. Auditions for this group will happen early in the year, in September.
