Plano ISD follows the recommendations of the Texas Education Agency in focusing on the developmental needs of the students in the guidance curriculum. It is a proactive and preventative program. The program guides students through age appropriate needs such as study skills, social skills, decision making , and problem solving. The counselor is first of all an academic counselor to follow through on the academic needs of students; secondly to assist student in an adjustment to crisis in their lives; to assist staff member and parents as a resource in areas needed for the students.
Classroom guidance is taught to each class once every two weeks. Lessons are usually one half hour in length, some longer if the need arises. Special events such as Red Ribbon Week emphasizing anti drug messages and Friendship Week emphasizing getting along with others are the special weeks scheduled for the year.
