ESL (English as a Second Language) is a program for students whose native language is one other than English. Often a student is American born but may live in a household where the primary language is one other than English. If either of these situations occurs, the student may be eligible for ESL services. The goal is to help the student through small group support, attain quality English in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing and to bring them to the academic level appropriate for their grade. The program is designed also to help them adjust to their new environment while keeping and appreciating the traditions and language of their native country.
A bilingual program is also offered for grades K-5 Spanish speakers at Hickey for Hunt students who qualify.
