    Attendance Procedures

The school day begins at 9:00 am, and ends at 4:25 pm.  If a student will be absent from school, the parent/guardian should email me before 9:10 am to report the absence. Upon returning to school following an absence, a student should report to the attendance office.  The attendance office opens at 8:30 am for your convenience.  A student should bring a note from the parent/guardian giving the student’s name, ID #, date of absence, brief explanation of absence, and a phone number where the parent may be reached.  A student not in attendance will be classified under one of the two categories listed:

Excused -- Any student may be excused for temporary absences resulting from personal illness, sickness or death in family, quarantine, or weather or road conditions making travel dangerous as determined by PISD administration.  Extenuating circumstances must be cleared by the principal.

Unexcused – The following are examples of unexcused absences: running late, no ride to school, vacations, overslept, non-school sponsored athletic events/programs, or missing carpool/PISD bus/DART.

If a student fails to submit a parent note, the absence(s) will be considered unexcused.  The student will be allowed (3) days to submit a note excusing the absence.  It is extremely important that this matter be taken care of promptly due to the states 90% attendance law and state truancy laws.

A parental request to excuse an absence due to unusual circumstances must be submitted in writing to the building principal at least five school days before the absence occurs.

    *Note*
Tardy - if a student is more than 10 minutes late to a class, the student will be marked as absent.

    Sign Out Procedures

We have 2 ways you can sign your student in or out:

    Option 1:
Parents will need to email Yariela Araya, at 005Absence@pisd.edu from the email registered on parent portal.
The email should be in this format:
(Student name and ID #) will be leaving school on (date) at (time) because (reason).
    Sincerely,
    Full name of parent
This will serve as your signature on the sign in/out sheet.

    Option 2:
Parents, guardians and/or siblings approved in parent portal can come into the school with a mask, a driver’s license and/or state ID.  You will approach the attendance clerk, provide Mrs. Workman your students' first and last name, and your driver’s license.  At that time, Mrs. Workman will call your students' classroom, and advise the teacher to send your student to the front office.  Please allow 10-15 minutes for your student to meet you at the front door or your vehicle.
Lastly, parents, if your student will be driving themselves to a doctor’s appointment or leaving school early for any reason, please send me an email to 005Absence@pisd.edu  stating “I am giving my child permission to drive on (date) at (time) to (location).

    *Note*
There will be no sign outs after 4:00 pm.

    Sincerely,

    Yariela Araya
