    Personal Electronic Device Policy

McMillen High School seeks to create a 21st century learning environment where electronic tools will be used to shape a dynamic learning experience for each student. We also believe that this practice is a privilege, not a right. To that end, students will be allowed, but not required, to bring their own electronic device to class to engage in teacher directed research. Such a bold and innovative experience requires students to be responsible digital citizens.

The following Personal Electronic Device Policy will be in force:

    1. All electronic devices including earphones shall be turned off and not visible or in use in the classroom unless otherwise directed by the classroom teacher.
    2. Upon authorization from the classroom teacher, students may use their own cell phone or laptop/electronic device for the purpose of classroom learning.
    3. Personal electronic devices will be allowed in common areas before school, during lunch or in the hallways between classes. Texting is allowable with cell phones- no phone calls.
    4. Students may use music listening devices before school and during passing periods in the common areas. Earphone equipment must be used at all times. Music listening devices shall not be used in the classroom unless allowed by the classroom teacher.
    5. Some testing situations will require teachers to collect all electronic devices prior to the test administration. In testing situations where electronic equipment is not collected, teachers will not allow students to use the restroom during quizzes and tests to insure the integrity of the testing environment.
    6. Earphone equipment must be removed from ears while moving through cafeteria lines to insure appropriate communication between cafeteria staff and students.
    7. Students bringing electronic equipment to school do so at their own risk.

Failure to abide by this policy shall result in the following disciplinary action:

    1. 1st offense- staff member shall confiscate the item and deliver it to the front office. The student may retrieve the confiscated item after 4:15 PM that day.
    2. 2nd offense- staff member shall confiscate the item and deliver it to the front office. The student’s parent must retrieve the confiscated item from the front office.
    3. 3rd offense- staff member shall confiscate the item and deliver to the front office. The student’s parent must retrieve the confiscated item. The student will not be allowed to bring electronic devices to campus for the remainder of the school year. This 3rd offense will also serve as grounds for additional disciplinary action.
    4. Failure to allow a staff member to carry out the function of these duties will be considered an act of insubordination and will be met with the appropriate disciplinary consequences.
