Mr. Phillip J. Curry
Greetings and welcome to American Sign Language. I am a native Californian, although I have lived in different places around the country over the years, before settling here in Texas since 2008.
I enjoy working out and participating in physical activities, such as running and cycling. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do, especially going on road trips during summers. One of my favorite experiences is driving from Texas to Washington state, going through Yellowstone National Park and Arches National Park (surviving lightning and torrential rain while visiting the Delicate Arch). Another favorite experience was flying to Portland, OR and renting a car to drive up to Mount Rainier NP and Olympic NP.
I am beginning my 15th year teaching ASL in Plano ISD. I have taught ASL 1, 2, and 3 at various campuses in the district, such as Shepton HS, Vines HS, Williams HS, and Plano Senior HS in the past. I am starting my 8th year at McMillen HS.
People often ask me how did I learn sign language. That is probably the easiest question to answer, as I am deaf, and I have known sign language since my youth. I wear cochlear implant which helps me to hear what is happening around me.
My personal philosophy of teaching is that it is much more than just teaching the materials and giving assessments. It is about making personal connections with the students and leaving lasting impressions by preparing them for the future to learn how to communicate with people who have hearing loss and use ASL as their primary communication mode. That can benefit them by learning how to interact with people who are different from them, enhancing their personal growth and their future opportunities as well.
